Ralph Hills
March 16, 2026
For AML World Awareness Day 2026, Know AML was pleased to speak with Ralph Hills (https://know-aml.com/stories/ralph-s-story), a patient with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and Chair of the Know AML ambassador group, based in the US, and Anna Mamwell (https://know-aml.com/stories/anna-s-story), a patient with AML and Patient Ambassador for Know AML, based in the UK. We asked, What side effects did you experience during treatment for AML, what impact did they have on your daily life, and how did you manage them?
Ralph recalls his prolonged time spent in hospital recovering from the effects of his initial treatment. He describes how his wife, Dorcas Hills (https://know-aml.com/stories/dorcas-story), supported him during this time by helping him manage side effects and limiting contact with other people to avoid infections. He also highlights that there has been tremendous progress in the diagnosis and treatment of AML and that with each day there is more reason for hope.
Anna also discusses the extended periods of time spent in hospital during treatment and how this impacted her work and family life. She describes some of the strategies that helped her through this, such as focusing on one day at a time. She shares some of the side effects she experienced, including colitis, hair loss, nausea and sickness, and highlights that physical symptoms can also impact mental health. She encourages others to tell their care team about any symptoms or concerns so they can receive the right support to manage them.
