What are the signs and symptoms of AML, and which may get overlooked?

Charles Craddock

March 16, 2026

For AML World Awareness Day 2026, Know AML was pleased to speak with Know AML ambassadors Erik Aerts, a specialist hematology nurse based in Switzerland, and Charles Craddock, an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) physician based in the United Kingdom. We asked, What are the signs and symptoms of AML, and which may get overlooked?

Erik explains that common symptoms of AML include ongoing tiredness and weakness, bleeding, infections (sometimes with fever), shortness of breath, and dizziness. He notes that if a patient has a combination of fatigue, bruising, and infection, this indicates to him that they may need to be tested for AML.

Charles agrees that some patients with AML may develop symptoms gradually, such as ongoing fatigue, repeated infections, or bleeding. In these cases, doctors may carry out tests to better understand the specific type of AML and choose the most appropriate treatment. He also highlights that sometimes patients with AML can become unwell very quickly, with symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe infections, or kidney problems. In these cases, patients may require urgent hospital admission and immediate treatment.
