Erik Aerts
March 21, 2023
In preparation for AML World Awareness Day 2023, Know AML spoke to Erik Aerts (University of Zurich, Zurich, CH), a specialist nurse and Know AML ambassador.
Erik discusses which self-care measures he believes aid in managing the side effects of chemotherapy. Firstly, he highlights the importance of nutrition and working with a nutrition specialist. In addition, he advises how patients should avoid smoking, when possible, stay active by exercising as much as possible, learn to check their skin, sleep well, know when to call their doctor, and understand how and when to take their medication. Erik emphasizes that “when we all collaborate together and when the patient is in the middle of everything… self-care measures aid in the effects of chemotherapy.”
