For the AML World Awareness Day, Know AML spoke with Erik Thiele Orberg, Technical University of Munich, Munich, DE. We asked, What do we know about how a stem cell transplant (SCT) impacts gut bacteria?
Orberg begins by discussing the multifactorial impact on the microbiome, which can be attributed to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. He outlines disruptions due to the use of systemic antibiotics, and graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Finally, he touches on translocation and mucosal barrier injury, which lead to blood stream infections.
